Unique tungsten properties combined with the form-factor of flat products determine the intended use of such products that include wolfram sheets and flat bars. Screens against high-temperatures are very widely used at the market as this metal has the highest melting temperature (3422 °С) among other existing materials followed by tantalum (3020 °С) and molybdenum (2632 °С). But wolfram screens are used not only for protection against high temperatures, but also from radiation as they attenuate its flux.

Metotechnics offers wolfram sheets and flat bars. They can be ordered by phone, via e-mail or ordered on the price list page on our website.

Detailed description of the production of the above-mentioned products, grades and application recommendations are given in the corresponding sections on this page.

Grades

Sheets and flat bars are made of W and W-MP (metal-particle) grades. Wolfram is their main components with weight percent at least 99.931%. Other elements included in this material are additives such as nickel (Ni) with weight percent not higher than 0.004%, aluminium (Al) - 0.002%, iron (Fe) - 0.009%, silicon (Si) - 0.004%; calcium (Ca) - 0.010%; molybdenum (Mo) - 0.040.

W-MP wolfram chemical composition should comply with the requirements of TC 48-19-106-91 standard.

Production

Billets serve as primary semifinished products for producing sheets and flat bars. Firstly the blanks are processed with flat forging involving an air hammer and then are rolled at roll mills. These technological operations are performed simultaneously with heating the blanks. This is required for making the material plastic enough as under room temperature tungsten is rather brittle and its pressurizing can destroy the material. This allows getting sheets and flat bars with thickness up to 0.6 mm. For making thinner products cold rolling is applied additionally.

Wolfram flat bars and sheets are not thermally processed; they are supplied in an unannealed condition, but they are processed chemically and mechanically. The product surface is pickled and the edges are trimmed.

Wolfram sheet and flat bars (sizes, extreme tolerances supply condition, mechanical properties) shall comply with the requirements of GOSTs and TC such as GOST 23922-79, TC 48-19-106-91 etc.

Application

Due to good high temperature strength tungsten sheets (so as any other products made of this refractory metal) are used under extremely high temperatures. They are used for making different fitments for high-temperature furnaces - heat screens, platforms and other fastening elements.

Tungsten sputtering targets made in form of plates are used for thin barrier films when metaling semi-conductor components of integrated circuits.

In nuclear-power engineering wolfram sheets are used as screens for attenuating the radiation flux.

Prices

Prices for wolfram sheets and flat bars are given on Cost page. The interactive table there also contains information on the sizes and grades of the described materials.
