Vanadium rods and round bars are semi-finished products, from which the final product of round section is produced. This is one of the most popular forms of vanadium rolled products, which is convenient both for further machining and for dosing in foundry, glass and chemical production (in particular, as a catalysts component).

Grades

Products are made from pure vanadium (V) VnP-1 and VnP-2.s

The main component is V, its percentage content is at least 99.38% and 99.04%, accordingly. Among the most weighty impurities are iron (Fe), aluminum (Al) and silicon (Si). Their maximum mass fraction is 0.25%, 0.3% and 0.3%, accordingly. Minor controlled impurities include the gases oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H), and carbon (C).

The chemical composition of the VnP-1 and VnP-2 grades is regulated by the technical conditions 48-4-374-76.

Production

Vanadium rods and round bars, as well as similar products made of other refractory materials (tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium), are produced by pressure treatment. Cylindrical vanadium ingots obtained by cathode-ray melting are used as blanks. Deformation is performed in a vacuum or neutral environment in order to eliminate oxidation and gas saturation of the final semi-finished product.

Depending on the length of the products, they are delivered in autofrettaged or annealed state (the length is less than or equal to 800 mm) and only in autofrettaged state if the length of the vanadium round bars is more than 800 mm. Machining is also performed depending on the size. Vanadium rods with a diameter of 3 to 15 mm are not processed; from 10 to 15 - are ground along the length; more than 15 mm - are ground only on the side surface. The ends are cut off evenly.

The sizes of semi-finished products in diameter can be from 3 to 100 mm inclusively. Vanadium rods of small diameters are produced with a minimum length of 300 mm; medium - 200 mm; large - 100 mm.

Rods and round bars made of vanadium must meet the requirements of the technical conditions 48-4-374-76, which regulates the grades, the delivery status of products, its sizes and maximum deviations, packaging and other important technological parameters.

Very often, the product of a round section is called a vanadium round bar. GOST 25501-82 does not contain this definition for workpieces and semi-finished products, but in practice, this name is often used for rod of a round section and a large diameter.

Application

The main useful property of vanadium is its high mechanical strength. Accordingly, vanadium round bars are used for the production of important parts and components that work under high mechanical loads and temperatures. The examples are the pistons of cars internal combustion engines.
