Titanium pipe

Pipe belongs to standard and common semifinished products with a wide application; the main one is construction of pipelines for transporting different liquids. Besides low weight (density), titanium has a good corrosive resistance, especially in acidic media. So pipes made of this material allow constructing corrosive-resistant pipelines and pump equipment. These properties allow using these semifinished products in chemical industry where hostile environments are used.

Grades

Pipes are made of VT1-0, VT1-00 commercial titanium and ОТ4, ОТ4-0, ОТ4-1 alloys so as PT-7M, PT-3V; VT 14 grades.

The chemical composition of the stated grades is determined by GOST 19807-91 и IS 1 90013-81 standards. E.g., VT1-0 is commercial titanium without addition agents; PT-7М is titanium deformable alloy with aluminium (Al 1.8-2.5%) and zirconium (Zr 2.0-3.0%); ОТ4-1- Ti alloys with aluminium additive (Al 1.5-2.5%).

Production

Titanium semifinished products can be made with several methods. Industrial companies produce welded and seamless pipes.

Welded titanium pipes are made of strip with help of argon-arc welding. Products are supplied in annealed condition with pickled surface or without thermal processing or surface pickling.

Sizes, supply condition, mechanical properties of welded products are regulated by GOST 24890-81 standard.

Seamless pipes are made with hot rolling, cold rolling or cold drawing. Cold-worked pipes are supplied after thermal processing with pickled or polished surface. Hot-rolled titanium pipes have two quality categories - high and first-class. High-quality products are thermally processed in vacuum and have a mechanically processed surface, first-class quality products are thermally processed in usual environment and have a non-pickled and mechanically unprocessed surface.

Sizes, supply condition, mechanical properties of seamless hot-rolled pipe products are regulated by GOST 21945-76 standard, cold-worked titanium pipes - by GOST 22897-86, IS 1 90050-72, IS 1 90065-72 standards.

It should be mentioned that pipes with low diameters and thin walls are called titanium tubes.

Application

Titanium pipes are widely used in chemical industry due to high corrosive resistance and chemical stability against reactives. Their application is critical for chlorine-related spheres as only titanium is corrosive-resistant in liquid chlorine media, water and acid chlorine solutions.

Also they are used for producing pumps, pipelines and other products used for pumping acids and other hostile media.
