Ta unique properties combined with the form factor of flat products that include tantalum sheets and flat bars determine the product intended use. Although this metal is very expensive, some industries always use tantalum products (e.g., production of vacuum-tube devices).

Metotechnics offers tantalum sheets and flat bars. They can be ordered by phone, via e-mail or on the price-list page.

See the corresponding sections of this page for detailed description of the methods of producing, grades and application recommendations for these products.

Grades

The products are made of TVCh (high-purity tantalum). Tantalum (Ta) is the main component with weight percent exceeding 99%. Other elements included into the material are considered to be admixtures. Niobium has the highest weight percent (Nb) - 0.2%, as these two elements always occur together in minerals. The content of other admixtures such as titanium (Ti), aluminum (Al) is thousandths of percent and that of cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) - in tenthousandths of a per cent.

In compliance with IS 88.0.021.228-76, the above-described products should be made of tantalum received by vacuum melting. If the products are produced in compliance with TC 95.311-82, the primary metal should be made by powder metallurgy methods.

TVCh tantalum chemical composition is regulated by TC 95.311-82 standard.

Production

Billets (if the blanks were made by powder metallurgy methods) or ingots (in case of melting) serve as primary semi-finished products for tantalum sheets and flat bars. If tantalum sheets and flat bars are very thick (the overall reduction is 30-60%), they are produced by rolling under room temperature. If 90-95% reduction is required, flat forging of blanks is performed under 1100-1500 °С and then - cold rolling on roll mills. Reduction is a quantitive property of deformation for shortening the blanks or reducing its cross-section.

Tantalum sheets and flat bars do not pass thermal processing, they are supplied in unannealed form. At the same time, they can be chemically processed (pickled) for cleaning the contaminated surface.

Tantalum sheets and flat bars (size, extreme tolerance, supply condition, mechanical properties) should comply with the requirements of IS and TC such as IS 88.0.021.228-76, TC 95.311-82, etc.

Application

Tantalum is a very wide-spread material for producing components of vacuum-tube and electrical equipment. This can be explained by the combination of useful metal properties (high melting temperature, gas-absorption ability, etc.) Tantalum sheets are used for producing anodes for powerful oscillator tubes, directly- and indirectly-heated cathodes so as other components of vacuum-tube devices.

Good Ta corrosive stability allows using tantalum sheets and flat bars as construction materials in metallurgy and chemical industry.

Compatibility of this metal with human tissues allows using tantalum sheets and flat bars in medicine (anaplastic and traumatic surgery).

Also this metal has a range of applications typical for all refractory metals: tantalum sheets are used as heat shieldsand tantalum flat bars are used as heaters for high-temperature electric furnaces.

Prices

Tantalum sheet and flat bar prices are given on the Cost page. The interactive table there also contains the sizes and grades of the described products.
