These semi-finished products are the most widely-used ones in industry. They are applied in very important industries due to niobium useful properties. High-tech scientific instruments and nodes of sophisticated systems in nuclear energetics and physics are designed using niobium rods. These universal semi-finished products serve as primary blanks for making round products of small diameter.

Grades

The products are made of VN2, VN2AE and SB-1 niobium alloys. These grades contain molybdenum (Mo) and zirconium (Zr) as alloying agents, niobium (Nb) is the basic element.

VN2 component percentage: Nb - at least 93.62%, Mo - 3.8-5.2%; admixtures: Ta - 0.4%, Ti - 0.2%, Zr - 0.2%, Ni - 0.1%, Fe - 0.1%. VN2AE Zr serves as an alloying agent: niobium - at least 93.43%, molybdenum - 3.5-4.7%, zirconium 0.5-0.9%; admixtures, at least: tantalum - 0.4%, titanium - 0.2%, iron - 0.1%, nickel - 0.1%.

SB-1 has a high niobium (Nb) content (98%); the zirconium (Zr) content is 0.8-1.3%. It is used as an alloying agent. Controlled admixtures include tungsten (W), molybdenum (Mo) - 0.1%; tantalum (Ta) - 0.4%.

Content of carbon (C), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H) and silicon (Si) in the above-mentioned grades is basic points and thousandths of percent.

VN2, VN2AE chemical composition is described in IS1 90023-71 standard, SB-1 chemical composition - in TC 48-4-338-75.

Production

Niobium rods and round bars are produced by pressurizing the blanks. Vacuum-melted ingots made of niobium alloys serve as the primary raw materials. They are deformed by pressurizing. This process is performed in vacuum or neutral environment under 1400-1500 °C for preventing oxidation and gasing of the material.

The products are supplied in annealed or hard-drawn conditions, i.e. after thermal processing. Niobium rods of small diameter (3-15 mm) is not subject to mechanical processing excluding some separately agreed cases. Large products are always processed by turning.

These products have a very wide size (diameter and length) range. Thus, Ø can be 3-100 mm and the length can be 150-1000 mm.

Niobium rods and round bars should comply with the requirements of IS1 92028-90 and TC 48-4-338-75. They regulate the product sizes, extreme tolerances, mechanical properties, supply condition, marking, packaging and other important properties.

Round rods are often called niobium round bars. This is right for products of large diameter. GOST 25501-82 does not contain the definition of a round bar for blanks and semi-finished products, but practically this name is often used for round rods of large diameter.

Application

Science-driven industries are the main consumers of the above-mentioned products. Thus, niobium round bars are widely used in superconductors as conducting strands. This property is also used for charged particle accelerators, fusion reactors and other sophisticated devices. Besides high melting temperature and durability, niobium has high corrosion stability in many aggressive media so niobium rods are widely applied in nuclear energetics as construction materials.
