Grades
Products are made of high-purity niobium. The content of Nb is 99.844%. The admixture content is very low. The most significant is tantalum (Ta) that is always present in commercial niobium. Its content is 0.1%. The content of iron (Fe), silicon (Si), molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W), titanium (Ti)is thousandths of percent.
The chemical composition of the above-given materials is regulated by TC 48-19-251-85 standard.
Production
The technological process depends on the product end size. Niobium tubes with standard wall thickness are made of pressurized blanks by rolling on pipe or roller mills. These products also serve as blanks for producing thin-wall niobium tubes. They are deformed by drawing.
Notwithstanding the method of producing pipe products, they are annealed in vacuum or protective atmosphere for removing the harden formed by cold pressurizing.
The sizes, extreme tolerances, supply condition, mechanical properties and other technological parameters of the described products are given in TC 48-19-251-85 standard.
Application
The main consumers of pipe products are chemical and nuclear industries. Niobium tubes and pipes combine some properties critical for the above-mentioned spheres:
high corrosion stability including in very aggressive media;
good strength properties under high temperatures (refractoriness, high-temperature strength);
special properties.
Niobium pipes and tubes are widely used in producing heat exchangers used in nuclear energetics. In chemical engineering the above-mentioned products are used for making different acid-resistant structures - pipelines, distillation units, aerators, coils.
