Besides classical properties such as refractoriness or mechanical strength niobium has some specific properties applied in science-driven industries (e.g., superconductivity). Very often blanks should be very small (as in the case with electronic devices) so niobium wire is very suitable for this. Grades
Products are made of Nb1 grade - high-purity niobium with Nb content 99.84%. The content of admixtures traditionally included into niobium and its alloys is very low. The most significant admixture is tantalum (Ta), , but its weight per cent is 0.1% only. The content of other components such as titanium (Ti), molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W), oxygen (O), hydrogen (H), nitrogen (N) and some others is basis points and thousandths of per cent.
The chemical composition of the described grade is given in GOST 16099-80 standard.
Production
Niobium wire so as filament are made by cold drawing, i.e. without heating the semi-finished products. But intermediate recrystallization annealing is made between the passes. Forged or pressurized rods serve as the primary material for their production. Preliminary hot deformation is made of reducing the blank size and making it plastic enough. This is made under 1100-1500 °С. Before drawing the semi-finished products are lubricated with a colloid-graphite mixture.
The ready-made products are supplied in hard-drawn form. The product diameters are 0.4-0.8 mm.

Application
The main application of niobium wire (so as of tantalum products) is production of solid-electrolyte capacitors applied in electronics. Another traditional application of niobium wire is production of superconductors. They are actively used in high-tech spheres such as nuclear physics or energetics.
