Nickel has such useful properties as high corrosive stability (so as under high temperatures) and high temperature strength. Due to this nickel as an alloying agent is always added to many heat-resistant and heatproof alloys. Also it is used for sputtering and deposition. Powder metallurgy methods allow making products of complex shape and with excellent properties.

Metotechnics offers two most common types of nickel powder - carbonyl and electrolytic ones. PNK-UT3, PNE and other grades are available for ordering (by phone, fax, via e-mail or on our website).

See the corresponding sections of this page for the above-mentioned grades, production methods and applications of the described products.

Grades

The described products are made of high-purity nickel. Nickel content depending on the grade is 99.5-99.9%.

PNK (carbonyl) and PNE (electrolytic) are the most common grades. By chemical composition PNK can be divided into 4 groups: U, 0, 1, 2; PNE - into two groups: 1, 2. Carbonyl nickel powder of U and 0 groups contains at least 99.9% of Ni, powder of 1 and 2 groups - at least 99.7%. Electrolytic nickel powder of groups 1 and 2 contains at least 99.5% of Ni + Co. PNK is also classified by bulk density into the following groups: T - heavy, subgroups 1, 2, 3, 4; L - light, subgroups 5, 6, 7, 8; K - coarse-grained, subgroups 9, 10.

PNK-UT3 and PNE-1 are the most common grades.

The chemical composition of carbonyl (PNK) and electrolytical (PNE) nickel powder is regulated by GOST 9722-97.

Production

Usually these products are made by the following methods:
  • carbonyl (carbonyl dissociating);
  • electrolytical (electrolytic reduction);
  • reduction of nickel compounds.
PNK powder is made by carbonyl method. Nickel carbonyl Ni(CO)4 is used as the primary raw material. The process has two stages. On the first stage the primary raw material that contains nickel reacts with carbon oxide and forms carbonyl. This stage is called carbonyl synthesis. On the second stage carbonyl is dissociated (decomposed) into nickel and carbon oxide. This stage is called thermal decomposition of carbonyl.

PNE powder is received by electrolytic reduction. Pure metal is extracted on the cathode after passing direct current through water solution of the extracted metal (nickel) or its melted salt.

It should be mentioned that carbonyl and electrolytical production methods are used for producing pure nickel powder.

After reduction nickel powder is produced by removing the non-metal component from the chemical compound (nickel oxide or salt). This is made by adding a reducing reagent. It reacts with the non-metal component (oxygen or salt residue) and pure metal is extracted. As a rule, hydrogen is used as the reducing reagent.

The particle size depends on the grade. Thus, PNK-UT1,..., PNK-UT4 and PNK-0Т1,..., PNK-0Т4, PNK-1L5,..., PNK-1L8 should have particles less than 20 microns. PNK-2К9 grade should have 71-100 micron grains, PNK-2К10 - 45-71 micron grains. The amount of particles with other size should not exceed 20% of the batch mass (heavy and coarse-grained powders) and 15% (light powders). The size of PNE-1 grains should be less than 71 microns and the content of particles less than 45 microns should be at least 30% of the batch mass. Size of PNE-2 grains the particle size should be less than 250 microns, content of grains less than 71 micron should be at least 3% of the batch mass. The amount of particles with an other size should not exceed 4% and 3% correspondingly.

Grain sizes, bulk density, supply condition of the described products are regulated by GOST 9722-97..

Nickel powder with a small grain size is also called nickel dust.

Application

Nickel powder is widely applied in modern industry. There are many alloys with nickel as the main component (e.g., nickel, copper-nickel alloys). This metal has a good high-temperature strength, heat resistance and corrosion stability. This determined the use of nickel as an alloying agent for different steels and alloys. Also nickel-plating (application of a thin nickel film on metal surfaces for protecting and prettifying them) is widely used. Nickel powder is used for this. It is sputtered or deposited on the surface.
