Nickel cathode

As nickel cathodes are made of high-purity Ni, this allows applying its useful properties in other materials. Theoretically the described semi-finished products belong to sheets, but at a closer look it becomes obvious that the production methods are significantly different so as the requirements towards the blank size and properties. Nevertheless, cathode nickel also has a wide industrial application, in particular, in metallurgy.

Grades

Cathodes are made of N-0, N-1u, N-1, N-2, N-3 primary nickel. The above-mentioned materials have a very low admixture content. Their nickel content is 99.9%, 99.95%, 99.93%, 99.8% and 98.6% correspondingly.

The chemical composition of primary nickel is determined and regulated by GOST 849-97.

Production

Nickel cathodes are produced in form of sheets. But the method of producing them is completely different from producing nickel anodes. Cathodes are made by electrolytic reduction while anodes are made by hot rolling. Anode nickel serve as a primary raw material for cathode nickel. They contain 88-92% of Ni and up to 17 admixtures. никелевых анодов.

Among additional processing only edge trimming is applied for this type of semi-finished products. Pickling, annealing, quenching and other actions that improve the material mechanical properties are not provided by the manufacturing process.

As further processing for finalization is not provided for these products, there are no requirements towards the size and mechanical properties of nickel cathodes. GOST 849-97 regulates the supply condition of the above-mentioned semi-finished products.

Application

Nickel cathodes are not applied as construction materials or as blanks for producing more complex items. Their main advantage is their chemical composition that determines high purity of nickel. As this metal has many useful properties such as high-temperature strength, heat resistance, corrosive stability and wear resistance it is widely used as an alloying agent for heatproof, heat-resistant and stainless steels. When these steels and alloys are melted, nickel cathodes are added to the melt as burden.
