These are small-diameter round rolled products (compared to rods), which are very common for solving various industrial tasks. The main advantage of monel is its high corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments. But small size of the described semi-finished products is not decisive in their application. In electrical engineering and electronics, where monel wire is used, the temperature coefficient of electrical resistance and the actual specific electric resistance is more important.
In Metotechnics you can buy monel wire and filament. The available grades for order that can be made in different ways (phone, fax, email, website) are: NiCuFeMn 28-2,5-1,5, Monel 400 and others.
More information about the alloys, their production methods and application areas, is presented on this page in appropriate sections.
Grades
Products are made from the grades NiCuFeMn 28-2,5-1,5 and Monel 400, 401 and 404.
The main component of NiCuFeMn 28-2,5-1,5 is nickel + cobalt (Ni + Co), their total content is not less than 65.8%. There is also a large amount of cuprum (Cu) - 27-29%. In addition to the main elements, this grade contains 2-3% of ferrum (Fe), 1.2-1.8% of manganese (Mn) and some impurities.
The main component of Monel 400 is nickel (Ni), which content is at least 63%. Another important element is cuprum (Cu) - 28-34%. Ferrum (Fe) - 1.0-2.5% and manganese (Mn) - no more than 2% also present in this alloy.
It is worth noting that the chemical composition, physical and mechanical properties, characteristics and application areas of the alloys listed in this section are very similar. Comparison of these two grades is described in the article Comparison of alloys NiCuFeMn 28-2,5-1,5 and Monel 400.
The chemical composition of NiCuFeMn 28-2,5-1,5 is given in the standard GOST 492-2006, Monel 400 - in the standards of the company Special Metals Corporation (USA), which owns the rights to the trademark MONEL.
Production
The main technological operation for production monel wire is dragging. Rods of a small diameter serve as a workpiece.
The described semi-finished product has a minimum diameter of 0.3 mm and a maximum of 6.0 mm in accordance with the technical conditions 48-21-14-72 .
Monel wire of NiCuFeMn 28-2,5-1,5 grades is supplied in a hard (annealed) or soft (not annealed) state.
The sizes, delivery status, and mechanical properties of products are regulated by the technical conditions 48-21-14-72. Monel 400 is regulated by the standards of Special Metals Corporation (USA), which holds the rights to the MONEL trademark.
Monel wire that has small diameter values (usually less than 0.1 mm) is usually called monel filament. GOST 25501-82 does not contain the definition of filament for workpieces and semi-finished products, but in practice this name is often used.
Application
Monel wire is used in areas where there are very high requirements for the corrosion resistance of alloys. These industries include chemical, oil, shipbuilding, and medical industries. An important application is salt mining, where these products are used in units for salt evaporation.
