The main application area of constantan products is electrical engineering and thermometry. As a rule in the described areas the components of devices are small in size, so the round rolled products of small diameters, which include Constantan wire and filament, are excellent for the described purposes. Medium-temperature electric heaters, electrodes and thermocouple compensation leads are the main purpose of these constantan products

On the website of Metotechnics Company you can buy Constantan wire and filament. You can also order products by phone or email.

The technical parameters of semi-finished products and other useful information are presented on this page in the appropriate sections. Product standards, which can be found on our website, are also a useful source of information.

Grades

Products are made of copper-nickel alloy of Constantan grade CuNiMn 40-1.5.

The main component of CuNiMn 40-1.5 is copper (Cu), its total content is at least 56.2%. Other important components are nickel + cobalt (Ni + Co) - 39-41%. In addition, the grade contains 1-2% of manganese (Mn) and some impurities.

The chemical composition of the CuNiMn 40-1.5 alloy is regulated by the GOST 492-2006.

Production

The pressure treatment specifically the technological operation of broaching is used for the production of the described workpieces . It is carried out without additional heating of the workpieces, respectively, cold-drawn products are received.

Depending on the diameter, the Constantan wire is produced only in the solid state (diameters of 0.09 mm or less), as well as in the hard and soft states (diameters of more than 0.09 mm). Soft wire or filament is produced by annealing.

Product sizes, mechanical properties, delivery status, and electrical resistance are regulated by GOST 5307-77.

It is worth noting that Constantan wire that has small diameter values (usually less than 0.1 mm) is usually called Constantan filament or a micron-sized wire. GOST 25501-82 does not contain the definition of filament for workpieces and semi-finished products, but in practice it is often used.

Application

Semi-finished products are used in electrical engineering and in temperature measurement using thermocouples.

The alloy has a high electrical resistance that’s why Constantan wire and filament are used for the production of electric heaters, which maximum operating temperature does not exceed 500 °C.

The described copper-nickel alloy is also widely used in the temperature sensors production. Negative thermo electrodes of such thermocouples as ferrum-constantan, chromel-сonstantan, and copper-constantan are made from Constantan wire. In addition, the mentioned product is used for the production of compensation leads for chromel-alumel thermocouples.
