This is one of the most basic forms of semi-finished products. The powder can be used as an alloying element or part of a mixture, or sintered into the finished product. The properties of cobalt are quite diverse, which allows to use it for the production of magnets, wear-resistant and hard alloys, and even in paint products.
On the website of Metotechnics you can buy Cobalt powder. You can also order products by phone or email.
The technical parameters of semi-finished products and other useful information are presented on this page in the appropriate sections. Product standards, which can be found on our website, are also a useful source of information.
Grades
Products are produced under the grade PK-1U. It contains at least 99.35% of Cobalt (Co) and no more than 0.2% of Ferrum (Fe), as well as 0.4% of Nickel (Ni).
The chemical composition of PK-1U is standardized according to GOST 9721-79.
Production
The three most common methods of producing Cobalt powder are reduction of oxides and salts, electrolysis, and dissociation of carbonyls.
In the first method, Cobalt powder is obtained by removing a non-metallic component from a chemical compound (an oxide or cobalt salt) by adding a reducing agent. It reacts with a non-metallic component (oxygen or salt residue), and the metal is released in its pure form. Hydrogen is usually used as a reducing agent.
In the second method, Cobalt powder is obtained in the process of electrolysis. A pure metal is released at the cathode as a result of passing a direct current through the aqueous solution of the released metal (Co) compound or its molten salt.
In the third method, the semi-finished product is obtained from cobalt carbonyl (a compound Co with CO). The process takes place in two stages. In the first stage, the feedstock containing cobalt reacts with carbon monoxide to form carbonyl. This stage is called synthesis of the carbonyl. In the second stage, when heated, it dissociates (decomposes) into Cobalt and carbon monoxide. This stage is called thermal decomposition of carbonyl.
PK-1U powder is produced by electrolytic method.
The size of the cobalt powder particles must be less than 71 microns. The presence of grains with a larger size is allowed, but it’s amount must be no more than 4% of the batch weight. The mass fraction of powder particles smaller than 45 microns must be at least 30% of the batch weight.
The size of the grains, the supply of products are regulated by the GOST 9721-79.
Cobalt powder, which has a small grain size, is also called Cobalt powder.
Application
Cobalt powder is widely used in industry. The main areas of application:
production of tool steels and alloys, as well as hardmetal;
production of permanent magnets;
application of wear-resistant coatings;
production of paint products.
In the production of tool steels, Co serves as an alloying element that increases the strength and wear-resistance of the material. In carbide material mixtures (WC, TiC, TaC), it plays the role of a plastic connecting metal that cements particles of high-hardness refractory compounds.
Cobalt has a good resistance to demagnetization, as well as resistance to high temperatures and vibrations. These properties determine the use of this metal powder in the production of magnetic alloys, from which permanent magnets are made.
Having a high resistance to abrasive wear and friction wear, this semi-finished product is a part of alloys that are applied to the products in the form of coatings that prevent rapid wear.
The described products are used in the production of paints to give them certain shades (dark purple, light purple, blue, cobalt and other colors).
