Thermocouples are one of the most common devices for measuring temperatures in industrial equipment and household appliances. CAT properties (wide measuring range, high precision and readings stability) make them the most applicable thermocouples.

Grades

Products are made of chromel (NiCr 9,5) and alumel (NiMnAlCo) - thermocouple nickel alloys.

Nickel (Ni) is the main chromel component. Its share is 87.4-90.4% considering 0.6-1.2% of cobalt (Co). Chromium (Cr) is the second major component - 9,0-10,0%. Other chemical elements are represented by tenths and permils of per cent.

Alumel contains 91.5-95.1% of nickel (Ni) and 0.6-1.2% of cobalt (Co). It contains 1.8-2.7% of manganese (Mn), 1.6-2.4% of aluminum (Al) and 0.85-1.5% of silicon (Si), other chemical elements are represented by tenths of per cent and basis points.

The chemical composition of NiCr 9,5 and NiMnAlC 2-2-1 grades is regulated by GOST 492-2006.

Production

Chromel and alumel thermocouple wire is produced by drawing. This process belongs to pressurizing operations. The blanks are not heated during the process of making semi-finished products, so they can be considered as cold-worked ones.

Wire made of chromel and alumel alloys is supplied after thermal processing, i.e. in soft condition. Chemical and mechanical processing are not applied.

For further application it is necessary to choose a certain length pair in thermocouples with readings that are the closes to standard values. The process of thermocouple selection, gradation and verification is described in article Thermocouples. Types, properties, constructions, production.

The product size, supply condition, properties, measuring range are given in GOST 1790-77, nominal static properties for corresponding thermocouples are given in GOST R 8.585-2001.

Properties

  • Range of measured temperatures: -200 °С - +1100 (+1300) °С. The maximum temperature for short-term use is given in brackets.
  • Operated in neutral or oxygen-rich atmosphere.
  • Porcelain, quartz, fiber glass, enamels and asbestos are used for electrode insulation.

Application

The products made of the considered alloys are applied for producing chromel-alumel thermocouples (CAT). They are intended for measuring below-zero and above-zero (up to 1300 °С) temperatures. The described products are used in heating devices of industrial furnaces, energy equipment, laboratory devices and scientific equipment.
