Ferronickel

Nickel is one of the most important alloying agents. Currently, it is impossible to make a heatproof and heat-resistant steel without this component.

Grades

Ferronickel is designated differently than other ferroalloys (such as ferrotungsten or ferromolybdenum. Fe means the ferroalloy group and Ni means “nickel”. The number after the letters means the relative weight per cent of nickel and cobalt (Ni+Co), not the absolute one. The higher is the number, the lower is the Ni+Co content in the ferroalloy.

The standard regulates the following ferronickel grades: FeNi-1...FeNi-7. Ni+Co content is 25...3.8% correspondingly. These ferroalloys usually contain cobalt (Co) due to the presence of two mentioned chemical elements in ores. When ferronickel is produced Ni and Co are equally transferred to the ferroalloy. Iron (Fe) is also a very important part of FeNi so as other ferroalloys.

Ferronickel has such adverse admixtures as sulphur (S), carbon (C) and phosphorus (P). They have the highest weight per cent. Also, they sometimes include copper (Cu), silicon (Si) and chromium (Cr).

The chemical composition of ferronickel is regulated by TC 48-3-59-79 and ISO 6501:1988 standards.

Production

Several types of ore contain nickel. The general reserves of this chemical element are rather high. Sulphide copper-nickel ores have the highest Ni content (up to 4%). Such minerals as siegenite (Co, Ni)3S4, violarite Ni2FeS4, fletcherite Cu(Ni, Co)2S4, etc contain nickel. Silicious (lateritic) ores have a lower Ni content - 1-2%, but they are also used in industry. There аre aluminous, magnesian and silicious ores.

Ferronickel production includes several stages.
  • Preparation and homogenization of nickel-containing ore.
  • Burden preparation, batching and annealing in a rotating drum furnace.
  • Crude ferronickel production (with Ni content - 3.5-6%) by electric melting of hot burden in ore thermal furnaces.
  • Purification of crude ferronickel for removing sulphur (S) and its further oxygen blow in converters.
  • Pouring of purified material on a conveyor-type mold machine.
Ferronickel is supplied in form of ingots, slugs and ground particles.

Supply condition, batch selection particles and other requirements towards FeNi are regulated by ISO 6501:1988 and TC 48-3-59-79 standards.

Application

Ferronickel is mainly used in ferrous (62%) and non-ferrous metallurgy (19%). Their main application is the basis or alloying agent for steel and alloys.

Nickel is an essential component of most corrosive-resistant, heatproof and heat-resistant materials. The most spectacular examples are heat-resistant thermocouple alloys alumel and chromel; Ni-Mo и Ni-Cr-Mo based materials for chemical apparatus (hastelloys); chromium-nickel stainless steel.

If there are some strict requirements towards the material chemical composition, Ni in the ferroalloys used for their production can be replaced with pure metal. This makes them more expensive, but also allows reducing the admixture weight per cent in the end alloy.
